Natural Connections

Modern life in Scotland is increasingly busy. The connections our ancestors had with nature and the land are being lost. As leisure time shrinks, or is filled with hi-tech experiences, opportunities to experience nature become fewer. And yet it is possible to connect with nature on a day to day basis. All around us, the great web of life continues to hold its shape, and nature continues its eternal cycles. Keep looking, listening, smelling, touching - and keep experiencing natural connections.

Today started with two House Martins perching on the gable end of a house in Kincraig where (judging by the mud on the wall) they appear to have nested before. Later in the morning, a walk around Loch Vaa produced records of Common Sandpiper, Oystercatcher, Goldeneye, Little Grebe and Black-headed Gull (the first four probably breeding). Chickweed Wintergreen was flowering there and in Boat of Garten Woods. Swifts were over Kincraig and Aviemore. Around 6pm an Osprey flew over Kincraig (probably heading for the nest opposite the Swan Chapel). This evening, Lapwing and Redshank had chicks near Mullochard and Wigeon, Teal and Greylag Goose had ducklings/goslings on a field pond near Duthill. Two Brown Hares and two Rabbits were in fields in Strathdulnain.
