Natural Connections

Modern life in Scotland is increasingly busy. The connections our ancestors had with nature and the land are being lost. As leisure time shrinks, or is filled with hi-tech experiences, opportunities to experience nature become fewer. And yet it is possible to connect with nature on a day to day basis. All around us, the great web of life continues to hold its shape, and nature continues its eternal cycles. Keep looking, listening, smelling, touching - and keep experiencing natural connections.

A two hour walk around my home 1km square and the three adjacent squares produced a total of 36 species, the highlights being: a pair of Ravens at their nest, a flock of ten Lesser Redpolls, a lone Cormorant, two Kingfishers, three Great Spotted Woodpeckers, six Nuthatches, two singing Stock Doves and the following warblers all in song: seven Willow Warblers, ten Chiffchaffs and ten Blackcaps. Mammals consisted of Roe Deer and Grey Squirrel. Flowering plants included my second Cuckoo Flower of the year (after the first earlier this week).
