South Lanarshire was bathed in beautiful sunshine for most of the afternoon today. We were in Lanark and a walk out to Lanark Loch found Swifts and House Martins at three sites (with breeding confirmed for the latter species), Canada Goose, Oystercatcher and Moorhen pairs all on potential breeding territory, a female Mallard with ducklings, a lone male Yellowhammer and singing Wllow Warbler, Chiffchaff and Blackcap. Summering gulls were a feature as they are most places but four Common Gulls were notable among the more numerous Lesser Black-backed and Black-headeds. Heading home, a Kestrel was spotted crossing the M74 at Bothwell.
